Hydrogeomorphic Analysis

At the lower hierarchical scale of our study, we will examine effects on ecosystem structure and functioning of a river’s hydrogeomorphic structure at the valley-to-microshed scale (functional process zone) where prominent changes in large-scale landscape and channel characteristics often occur. Under a natural flow regime, these valley scale features lead to important stream differences, including channel number and velocity, substrate type/size, detrital abundance, autotrophic type and productivity, and interactions with the floodplain and riparia.

The nature and location of functional process zones in each study river will be determined in the year prior to sampling using RESonate, a tool developed for ArcGIS, that employs digital elevation model (DEM) data, information on basin geology, precipitation and existing hydrology data, in addition to remotely sensed imagery.
